International students are stuck because Hong Kong bans flights from the UK

Thousands of students could not book tickets and quarantine rooms in time, after Hong Kong issued a ban on flights from the UK from July 1 due to concerns about spreading the Delta variant.

For Timmin Lam, 22, an international student in Manchester, England, Hong Kong's flight ban from the UK this past week is the latest in a series of measures by the special zone that has prevented him from returning home for nearly two years. past year. "I feel trapped in the UK. I really want the pandemic to be under control," Timmin said.

On June 28, officials of the special administrative region said that Hong Kong will ban commercial flights from the UK, starting from July 1, to limit the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19.

The UK is classified as an extremely high-risk country and people in the country for more than two hours will not be able to board a commercial flight to Hong Kong. This is the second time Hong Kong has banned people from the UK, the first time was in December 2020 and lasted until May.

Before the ban, restrictions applied to people returning from the UK were relaxed, allowing vaccinated passengers to be isolated for only 7 days instead of 21 days. Therefore, thousands of students have planned to return to summer vacation. The sudden change made many children unable to react.

Wallis Au, 20 years old, a student of Physiotherapy in the UK, said: "I wish they announced this sooner so we have more time to organize and organize more things." Au booked a ticket to Hong Kong on July 5, but now cannot return.

Due to Hong Kong's strict Covid-19 regulations, many passengers cannot land in this city without making sure they have booked a hotel room in advance for isolation. When the ban was announced, parents rushed to find hotels for their children. Many people gave up because they couldn't find it.

"Even if I could have booked an earlier flight, my daughter wouldn't have been able to get on a plane without a reservation," lamented Debi Yeung, whose 20-year-old daughter is studying in Leeds.

Yeung said that she had changed her flight date and hotel room several times due to changes in regulations, while her daughter had planned to be tested for Covid-19 several times before the trip. "Now we have to give up. I don't know what else to do," Yeung said.
